Dundalk FC ‘cannot be allowed to go to the wall’, supporter and Louth TD Ruairí Ó Murchú has said.
Dundalk manager Jon Daly admitted after their 2-1 defeat against St Patrick's Athletic on Thursday night that the club have failed to pay players and staff.
Earlier that day, he had spoken with Brian Ainscough, the US-based businessman who had taken over Dundalk FC last November. While Ainscough was optimistic, the delay in payment remained a concern for all involved.
Speaking after it was revealed that the club is facing significant difficulties off the field, where players and staff have not been paid this week, Oriel Park season ticket holder Deputy Ó Murchú said: “We cannot countenance Dundalk FC going to the wall.
“There are huge fears in Dundalk today that the club is facing incredibly serious difficulties. I have spoken to a number of people, including those who are employed at Oriel Park, volunteers, fans and club management.
“I have been told that the FAI have been engaged and, at this moment in time, my information is that the ‘nuclear options’ are not on the table.
“There are investigations in relation to investment or buy-out and we will know more in the next couple of days.
“I feel very sorry for those who work in Oriel Park and I am advised that wages will be paid early next week. We need to make sure that a solution is found.
“The League of Ireland is going through a resurgence at the moment and Dundalk FC is one of the most important and historic clubs in the LOI.
“The integrity of the league is extremely important.
“I have been advised that Oriel Park management is not looking for direct government engagement at this time, but I have made contact with Sports Minister Thomas Byrne and the FAI about what is happening at the club.
“Hopefully, whatever is being looked at will provide a solution, that is creative and sustainable. We cannot countenance Dundalk FC going to the wall and, at a local level, we need to give the club all the support that we can.”
