Cracking day of darts yesterday in the Dundalk's Northend Bar and The Bodhrán for the annual Tommy Dunn Cup. 62 throwers competing across 16 boards in groups, each group winner then going through to make up the last 16 in the competition.

It was the last ranking qualifier in the Northend Bar Summer Series of Darts, the final of which is played for the Paddy Dixon Cup.

Tommy and Paddy were teammates and were part of some of the most successful teams in the Dundalk area over many years.

In continuing with the recent upsurge in interest in darts from youths in the area, there were a number of youth players playing in the competition.

Also competing on the day were a number of the Dunn family, with Tommy's son and daughter, Daniel and Joanne, playing alongside a few of Tommy's grandkids, Cara, Thomas and Calum.

Tommy's wife, Marion, would later in the evening do the draw for the last 16 of the competition.

The draw for the earlier groups threw up a number of tasty draws, with none more so than a group of Aidan O'Brien, Conor McArdle, Conor Carroll and Alan Dullaghan, with Alan winning all of his group games to emerge as group winner.

Another board of regular competitors of Frankie Quigley, Eamonn Rogan, Ciaran Treanor and Aidan Minto went down to the deciding game, with Aidan and Eamonn both winning two games. Eamonn would go on to win the final group game and top the group.

In the evening session, a group of death was drawn with Graham Unwin, Dylan Quinn, Simon Wykes and Raymond O'Brien all drawn together.

Dylan, a rising star of darts in Ireland and further afield, would go on to beat Raymond in the deciding game to top the group.

A group with John Kelly, Dennis Smith, Sean Briscoe and Aidan Thompson would go to a count back to see who would go through as group winner, with John going through as group winner by virtue of leg difference over Dennis Smith.

Also going through on the day as group winners were Nicky Watters, Michael Gillick, Fintan Rogers, Kevin Thompson, Stephen Shields, Daniel Dunn, Conor Dunn, Jarvis Fleming, Aidan Conroy, John Rafferty, Luke Murphy and Jarvis Fleming.

The draw was done by Marion Dunn, and one of the draws would see Daniel Dunn against Conor Dunn, and Daniel won a very tight contest. Old schoolmates, John Kelly was drawn against Stephen Shields, and Stephen would go on to beat John.

Last year's winner, Michael Gillick, was advancing through the competition nicely. After seeing off fellow Cavan Man, Nicky Watters, he would then knock out Eamon Rogan to reach the semi-final.

Stephen Shields got the better of Daniel Dunn in a very close match to reach the semifinals.

Meanwhile, not to be happy with hitting a 140 checkout, Dylan Quinn would go on to hit the big fish, a monster 170 checkout and in doing so would collect €100, which was sponsored by The Dunn Family for the 1st 170 checkout of the competition.

Also going well was Alan Dullaghan, who dug deep to beat Aidan Conroy and go on to reach the semi-final. The first semi-final saw Alan Dullaghan against Dylan Quinn; despite Alan's best efforts, Dylan would go on to win 4-0.

The other semi-final saw the reigning Tommy Dunn Cup holder against Stephen Shields. This was a classic encounter which went to the decider, and Stephen would go on to play Dylan in the final.

In the final, Dylan went one up, and Stephen would restore parity in the next game and level things up.

Stephens' form never faltered, but Dylan showed everyone watching the final why he's regarded as one of the emerging darting talents in Ireland and would eventually run out 5-1 winner.

Big thanks to all who sponsored boards for the final: Cathal Byrne, The Bodhran, Bridge Street Dart Events, Michelle Byrne, Ring A Drink, Northend Bar and The Northend Bar Social Club.

Presentation was made by Marion Dunn and also by Michelle Byrne of the Bodhran. Big thanks to Sheila Meehan and Michelle Byrne for hosting the event.

And also to Paddy Gibney, Jack Riordan, Aidan Minto and everyone else who helped out during the day to help make this year's event a massive success.

And finally, a big thank you to Marion Dunn and the family for allowing us to run the Tommy Dunn Cup.
