At the age of 60, Dundalk's Geraldine Finegan is redefining what’s possible in athletics. Leading off her relay team, Finegan helped shatter the world record in the 4x400m with a stunning time of 4:42.80.

Her explosive start, precise pacing, and relentless determination set the tone for a historic team performance, proving that age is no barrier to elite speed, power, and teamwork.

From battling injuries to refining her technique over decades, Finegan’s journey is a testament to resilience, discipline, and passion.

With teammates Moira Groome, Tina Gallagher, and Carol Kearney delivering equally remarkable legs, the record-breaking feat is as much about teamwork as individual excellence.

The story goes beyond the stopwatch: it’s about inspiring athletes of all ages to chase goals, challenge limits, and embrace a lifetime of movement. Finegan ran the opening leg, producing a controlled and confident performance.

She came powerfully out of the blocks, covering the first 200 metres strongly before settling into a steady rhythm and finishing her leg in a strong position for the team.

Moira Groome ran the second leg and delivered an excellent performance in her return from injury. The baton was then passed to Tina Gallagher, who showed the form that earned her five medals at the most recent European Championships.

Carol Kearney completed the relay with her fastest 400 metres of the season to secure the record-breaking performance.

Finegan said she was proud of the teamwork involved in the achievement. “Relay running is special because every athlete plays a crucial role. It was a wonderful team effort, and I’m very proud to have been part of it.

“Although I have four other multi-event World records, this one was very special as it is my first as part of a team relay.”

Finegan hopes the performance at 60 will encourage more people to stay active and pursue their goals at any age.
