A 25-year-old man who was caught speeding at 184kph on the M1 where a 120kph speed limit applies, was banned from driving for two years at Dundalk district court last week.

Fearghal Murphy of Ballinliss Road, Killeavy, Newry was initially charged with dangerous driving arising out of the detection by a speed enforcement checkpoint at Red Cow, Dundalk on July 26th last.

The court heard the defendant, who had no previous convictions, attends college one day a week and has four days “practical time” and the Defence solicitor stressed that it was out of character for his client who is studying mechanical engineering.

The solicitor added that Mr. Murphy, whose father was in court, has been severely reprimanded at home and is also "not known to police in Northern Ireland".

Judge Stephanie Coggans imposed a €400 in addition to the disqualification and said "he went at an awful speed - I'll say no more than that".
