Louth Gardaí have highlighted two recent incidents of dangerous driving in the Dundalk area as the Roads Policing Unit (RPU) carried out patrols.
In one case, the driver of a blue van was spotted using a mobile phone while travelling on the Dundalk to Carlingford Road.
The motorist passed a fully marked Garda patrol car without noticing, which Gardaí say shows just how distracting phone use can be behind the wheel. A fixed penalty notice was issued on the spot.
In a separate incident, a highway maintenance van was detected travelling at 139km/h on the M1 motorway. Gardai noted that the vehicle was carrying multiple items on the back which were not properly secured. Gardaí warned that this posed a serious risk, as the unsecured load could easily have fallen onto the road and caused a collision.
The driver was issued with a fixed penalty notice for speeding and now faces prosecution for the unsecured load offence.
