Ciaran Traynor produced a flawless round of golf to win the latest leg of the national Tile and Flooring Autumn Series over the weekend of October 11 and 12. Playing off six, he had 17 pars and a birdie at the third hole, to go around in 71 gross.

He earned four points for that birdie and had three-point pars at the fourth, seventh, 11th, 15th and 16th to record a stableford score of 43pts, having gone out in 22pts and come home in 21pts.

That was enough to give him a one-point victory over the in-form Adrian Kenny, who recently won both the gold medal and the IJM Minor Scratch Matchplay Trophy.

Playing off 19, Kenny went out 20pts thanks to three-point pars at the first and eighth and three-point bogey at the index one fourth with his only blemish coming at the third where he double-bogeyed for one point.

He had another double bogey at the 17th but three-point pars at the 10th, 11th, 14th, 15th and 18th saw him cover the back nine in 22pts for an overall total of 42pts.

Alan McCabe (11) made a welcome return to the prizes by winning Division 1with 40pts, which was one better than Paul Murphy (2), while John Prendergast (16) took Division 2 with 41pts, with Robert Lynch (16) a point further back. Countback was needed in Division 3 as Noel Reidy (20) pipped Michael Noone (21) after both had shot 39pts.

Niall Henry, with 38pts took the gross prize. His round of 70 gross included an eagle three at the 10th, a birdie three at the 16th and a bogey five at the eighth as he parred the other 15 holes.

Visitor Derek Yorke (14) from Mannan Castle won last Wednesday’s McKenna Man Open Singles Stableford with a score of 42pts as Ciaran Johnston (+1) took both the Division 1 and Gross Recognition accolades.

His gross score of 68 included an albatross at the par five sixth when his six iron second shot found the hole. Daniel Gallagher won Division 2, and Timothy Jewell (28) won Division 3.

The annual interclub matches against Greenore for the DunGreen Cup and the GreenDun Cup took place over the last few weeks in Greenore and saw the home team come out on top, but Dundalk did taste success in the DunDun Cup at home to Dunmurry.

Ben Cahill finished T23 in the latest round of the R&A Student Series, which was played at Malone Golf Club in Belfast. He shot rounds of 74, 73 and 73 for the 54-hole event.

He is T18 on the Order of Merit after two of the four qualifying rounds. The top 30 players will qualify for the Series Final, which will be played in St Andrews next April.
