Dundalk Gaels GFC has led tributes to 'outstanding clubman' Joe Berrill who passed away in recent days.
The late Mr Berrill gave a life-time of service to the club as a player and for many years after. Many people paid tribute to his dedication whether it was through supporting teams, fundraising or standing in as umpire.
Dundalk Gaels FC posted a tribute saying: "We have lost at outstanding clubman in Joe. From his earliest days, Joe gave the club his all, as a player, supporter, committee-member and fundraiser. He was never one for the limelight, preferring instead to work quietly, but very effectively, in the background. Above all he was a gentleman, a colleague who'll be sadly missed by all at Páirc na nGaeil. May his gentle soul rest in peace. Sympathy to Éamonn and Cáthal and the extended Berrill family".
In condolences on RIP.ie, another described him as a "great GAA man".
"To all of Joe's Family very sad to hear the news of Joes passing, he was a gentleman, always wanted to help umpire in the game he loved , he will be sadly missed, Rest In Peace Joe," wrote referee Gerard Corrigan of Mattock Rangers.
"I am so sad to read of his passing. He was such a lovely man and he will be sorely missed by his former colleagues. Rest easy Joe. Until we all meet again," wrote Lorraine Quigley of Louth Co Council.
Others described him as "one of life's true gentlemen".
"Shocked and saddened to hear of Joe’s passing, what a great Gaels man and an absolute gentleman. Always had time for a chat and a laugh. He will be sorely missed by all in the ramparts and wider Louth GAA circles, Condolences to all of Joe’s family. May he RIP," wrote Sean McCann.
The recurring phrase in the many tributes paid to him was "gentleman".
Late of Central Avenue, Parnell Park, Dundalk, Mr Berrill died peacefully in the wonderful care of the staff of The Louth County Hospital. 26th February 2024.
Joe - son of the late Charles and Margaret, brother of the late Mary Conachy and brother-in-law of the late Brendan Conachy. Joe will be sadly missed by his brothers Eamonn and Cathal, nephews Paul and Gerard, nieces Linda, Mairead, Verona and Mairead, grandnephews Calum, Conor and Kylan, and grandniece Sophie, sister-in-law Majella, nephews-in-law Gavin and Sean and niece-in-law Ciara, relatives and friends.
He will repose at McGeough's Funerals Jocelyn Street (A91 XW66) from 3pm until 7pm on Wednesday, February 28. Removal to take place on Thursday afternoon to St. Patrick’s Cathedral, arriving for Mass at 2pm. Burial afterwards in St. Patrick’s Cemetery.
