Well-known Irish radio broadcaster, Adrian Kennedy has revealed on his social media account that he had a cancer scare late last year.

He starts the post by talking about getting run of the mill bloods done at the doctors,

"Late last year I got bloods done for a Doctor who was investigating something. The bloods came back normal, except for “a slightly elevated PSA level. He asked if he could refer me on for further examination - I said sure, not in the slightest bit worried.
Then On 20th March - after three months of bloods, prodding, scans and biopsies- I was told the devastating news that I had prostate cancer.
It turned out that it was fairly aggressive and I’d two options- radiotherapy (every day for six weeks) or the ‘nuclear option’ to have radical prostectomy surgery - the robotic removal of the prostate. Docs aren’t allowed tell you what to do - but when we asked the surgeon “if I was your brother what would you tell me to do” and he said ‘get it out’ that’s what I did."

He goes on to talk about the nerves he experienced leading up to the surgery and says the professionality of the hospital staff were one of the reason that relaxed him,"Friday 17th May was surgery day in Beaumont Hospital. I was shitting myself all that week coming up to it - but when my wife dropped me off at 7:30am and I was dealt with so professionally by hospital staff I soon relaxed.
I went to theatre, got up on the bench and the nurse said “this drip in your hand will relax you”…and that was it. I remember nothing else until that afternoon when I woke up in the ward.
The following days were a bit of a struggle with a catheter pee bag etc. but got easier over time."

Thankfully the surgery went well and he is now recovering, "Now 8 weeks later I’m almost 100% back to normal.
I met with my surgeon this week who has given me the all clear. The surgery was very successful, cancer hadn’t spread beyond the prostate and my PSA level is zero. I’m now cancer free and good to get on with my life.
It’s been a whirlwind journey and brush with cancer. Hopefully that’s it forever.
The reason I’m writing this post is to appeal to men over 40 to get their PSA level checked regularly. Mine was found by fluke. I’d never have gone to get it checked cos I’d NO SYMPTOMS.
Had that Doc not spotted the raised PSA level I’d be blissfully unaware that an aggressive cancer was growing inside me.
GET CHECKED!!!"

All the best to Adrian in his recovery and this stands as a great reminder to take care your health.
