A leading dog trainer has hit out at the "most selfish" thing you can do as a dog owner.

Emerald Tails Dog Training in Northern Ireland posted to social media about habits dog owners fall into that are extremely inconsiderate.

One of those habits is allowing their dog to run freely off the lead in areas where they should have dogs leashed, and even in place where it's not required.

"The most selfish thing a dog owner can do in a public space where it’s signposted to have dogs leashed," they said.

"Unless you’re in a place permitting off-lead dogs and yours has impeccable recall where it will listen to you 100% of the time and not run up to other dogs, it should not be off-lead.

"Many dogs hate when others run up to them and get into their face, even more so because they’re restricted. Many dogs don’t like other dogs and may be reactive," they warned.

"No 'It’s okay, he’s friendly!' bulls**t. You’re taking no consideration for the other dog and its owner," the page concluded.
