RIP: Pensioner dies after falling from cliffs near popular beach

Rescue 115 - Shannon Airport based Irish Coast Guard Helicopter - was one of the emergency services to respond

A PENSIONER has died following a fall from cliffs near a popular beach. 

Emergency services attended the scene of an incident at Nuns Beach, Ballybunion in Co Kerry shortly after 6pm on Tuesday. 

Gardaí, Ballybunion Rescue, National Ambulance Service from Tralee, Ballybunion Unit of the Irish Coast Guard, and Rescue 115 - Shannon Airport-based Irish Coast Guard Helicopter - all responded.

A Garda spokesperson said: "The body of a man aged in his 70s was removed from the scene and taken to University Hospital Limerick where a post mortem will take place."

No foul play is suspected at this time. 

A spokesperson for volunteer group Ballybunion Rescue said their pagers were activated by Valentia Coast Guard at 6.01pm to reports that a male had fallen from the cliffs between the Ladies and Nuns beaches in Ballybunion.

"Our IB1 D class was launched at 6.08pm with three crew and the male was taken from the water at approximately 6.10pm.

"The male casualty, not believed to be local to the area, was pronounced dead shortly afterwards. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam," said the Ballybunion Rescue spokesperson.
