IN THE final sitting of Dáil Éireann before summer recess, Deputy Michael Moynihan raised an important question regarding the steps taken by the Taoiseach's Department to honor the program for Government pledge to support non-binary individuals.
The response provided by Taoiseach Leo Varadkar sheds light on the government's commitment to diversity and inclusivity.
The specific question put forward by Deputy Moynihan was inquiring about the implementation of positive measures, including the use of correct pronouns and improving official forms, to assist non-binary people. The subject of non-binary inclusivity has been gaining prominence globally, with an increasing recognition of the need for tailored approaches to accommodate diverse gender identities.
Non-binary individuals often encounter challenges in navigating bureaucratic processes that do not accommodate their gender identity, and there are calls for tangible actions to be taken to rectify this.
In his written response, Taoiseach Varadkar emphasised that the Department of the Taoiseach is dedicated to creating a diverse and inclusive workplace where all colleagues, regardless of their gender identity, feel respected, valued, and included.
However, it was clarified that the Department of the Taoiseach, due to its central role in government operations, does not directly provide services to the public that would require the use of official forms. As such, it does not have a direct impact on the improvement of official forms to assist non-binary individuals.
