Since his appointment in December ‘24, Larkin has seen an incredible upturn in Louth’s fortunes, transforming a team that narrowly avoided relegation to Division Four in the 2024 season into league winners.
Louth’s success wasn’t without its challenges, particularly with the absence of Kate Flood, the county’s most influential player over the past 15 years.
However, Larkin’s trust in youth paid off, with exciting youngsters like Zara Sweeney, Amy Murray and Sophie Everitt making significant contributions alongside more experienced players like Shannen McLaughlin, Eilísh Hand, the dynamic midfield duo of Áine Breen and Aoife Halligan, and Ciara Woods, whose goal-scoring ability proved crucial.
The team’s only defeat in the league came in a final-day loss to Limerick, which didn’t impact their overall standing.
Their success also brought a measure of compensation for a narrow miss on promotion a year ago, finishing just a point behind second-placed Wexford.
Louth did, however, take the Leinster and All-Ireland JFC titles in an unforgettable summer for football followers in the Wee County.
Looking ahead, Louth will be competing in Division Two next year with attractive fixtures against teams like Dublin, Monaghan, Mayo, Tipperary, Tyrone and Antrim to look forward to.
Their immediate focus, though, is on the upcoming Leinster Intermediate Championship, where they will play the winner of the Wicklow vs Wexford quarter-final.
In the other semi-final, Westmeath take on Laois, with both semi-finals due to take place on Saturday, May 2nd.
