An extendable baton was found in a car stopped by gardaí for speeding and overtaking traffic as it approached a roundabout, Dundalk district court heard last week.

The court was told Dariusz Pac (42) with an address at Carroll Village, Dundalk was signalled to stop arising out of the incident on Tom Bellew Avenue on March 25th last year and was 'extremely nervous'.

He gave no explanation for having the weapon.

The court heard he had two previous offences, but none of them for possessing an offensive weapon.

The father of one, who works has a carpenter with timber frames, had €50 in court.

The defendant told the court "I didn't hit nobody" and said he didn't see why he was being prosecuted.

Judge Nicola Andrews imposed a €250 and made a destruction order in relation to the baton.
