There was a sense of pride from Naomh Moninne manager Aidan Carter as he reflected on his side’s defeat to Clane in the AIB Leinster Junior Club Hurling Championship quarter-final on Saturday.
Speaking afterwards to the Dundalk Democrat, he said: “Overall, I think we showed tremendous character. We stayed with them for long periods, and while the final margin was seven points, I felt the game was much closer in terms of performance.

“They’re playing senior hurling in Kildare and have several county players, so although we’re disappointed with the result, we can be very proud of the performance.”
It had been a tough opening few minutes for the Louth champions as Clane burst from the traps, but Moninne soon found their rhythm and led at the break.
“We started a bit slowly for reasons we’re not entirely sure of, and they took advantage with a few early scores. Once we settled into the game, though, we showed what we’re capable of and went in a point up at half-time.”
With the momentum on their side, Moninne entered the dressing room at the half-time break full of belief.
“At half-time, the message was simple: keep doing what we’re doing. Take our scores when in the right positions and defend as a unit. We reminded the lads of their ability and to trust themselves.”
However, the second period brought its own challenges when they were reduced to fourteen men after Kyle Rafferty received his second yellow card, but they refused to give in.
“That’s really been the theme all year: keep going, keep believing. The lads have been outstanding; their attitude is 110%. The mentality in this group is brilliant, and we know it’s never over until the final whistle. I thought the sending off was harsh.
“Kyle has been excellent, he plays hurling the way it should be played. I felt the first yellow was definitely the wrong call, but at the end of the day, we can’t control the referee’s decisions.”
Despite the result, Carter remained optimistic when reflecting on the 2025 season overall.
“It’s been a long journey since we started back on January 8th, but it’s been a fantastic one. The lads have improved enormously, and the squad has grown in strength and belief.
“There’s a real sense now that we can compete and win. Hopefully, this is just the beginning and a stepping stone to even greater success.”
