The President’s visit began at 10.30am with a reception at the club, followed by a presentation on the history of Dundalk Young Irelands and its recently launched Strategic Development Plan 2025–2030, which sets out an ambitious roadmap for growth, inclusion, and facility development.

Guests then toured the grounds, met club members, and took part in discussions on the club’s future vision.

At lunchtime, Mr Burns walked the short distance to St. Joseph’s National School, where pupils formed a guard of honour before enjoying a coaching showcase led by club coaches.

The President addressed pupils and teachers before concluding with photos and farewells.

Founded in 1884, Dundalk Young Irelands holds the distinction of being the first GAA club established in Ireland.

Today, the club has grown to over 400 registered players, fielding teams from nursery to senior, with thriving ladies’ football now at every age group.

In the past three years alone, membership has doubled, a testament to the passion and commitment of players, coaches, and the community.

Club Chairperson Kieran Maguire described the visit as a landmark moment: “We were honoured to welcome Uachtarán Jarlath Burns to our club and community. His visit celebrated our proud history and gave us the chance to showcase our plans for the future. Dundalk Young Irelands has been at the heart of Gaelic games in Louth for over 140 years, and with our new development plan, we look forward to building on that legacy.”

Secretary Alan Hanks added: “The presence of the GAA President was recognition of the incredible work being done by our volunteers, coaches, and players at every level. It was a day of pride for our members, St. Joseph’s NS, and the wider Dundalk community.”

The day was attended by representatives of the Louth County Board, local councillors, TDs, club sponsors, and members of the local press and radio, ensuring it will be remembered as a special occasion in the club’s long and distinguished history.
