Louth senior hurlers are back on the road today as they head west to take on top-of-the-table Mayo in Round Three of the Nicky Rackard Cup. The game throws in at 3.00pm at Hastings Insurance McHale Park in Castlebar.
After a brilliant unbeaten run through the Allianz National Hurling League, which saw the Wee County lift the Division Four title, Trevor Hilliard’s side hit a bump in the road when they lost 0-20 to 0-15 against Sligo in their opening game of the Rackard Cup.

But they bounced back strongly last weekend, turning in a powerful performance to see off Fermanagh 3-20 to 0-15 at St. Brigid’s Park, Dowdallshill.

Hilliard has named a settled starting XV for today’s clash, with captain Conor Clancy between the sticks. The full-back line is made up of John Casey, Conor Quigley and Stephen Kettle, while Adam Plunkett, Leon Fox and Aaron McGuinness take up the half-back slots.
Ben Goss-Kieran and Conor Murphy will man the midfield, with Paddy Lynch, Thomas McCreesh and Peter Fortune lining out across half-forward.
Up front, Darren Geoghegan, Seán Flynn and Brian Corcoran will look to do the damage. Looking ahead to the trip to Castlebar, Hilliard knows the size of the task his side faces.
When assessing Mayo, he said: “They had a good win against Armagh. A big lead at half-time. I was just watching 17-1. So obviously Armagh was kind of looking to see what they had and didn't come out.
“But they came out in the second half and hit a couple of early scores. But then Mayo then pulled away again. Mayo is the team in the Championship.
“They beat London as well. So, they are the team in the league and probably are going to be the team in the Championship.
“But we're not going to go down fearing them. We played them twice last year. They were two tough games for us.
“We've learnt from that, and we've come on from that. We're blooding young boys all the time. So, we'll take each game as it comes, and we'll see where we go from there.”
The referee for today’s game is Michael Connolly from Sligo.
