Dundalk based Heat pumps Ireland along with Carlow County Council have been named the winners of the Better Energy Community Award for its Bagenalstown energy upgrade project, at the 10th annual Sustainable Energy Awards in the Shelbourne Hotel in Dublin.

This project involved energy upgrades in a variety of homes, schools and community buildings including a town hall, a swimming pool and a special needs adult education centre, using both traditional and innovative energy technologies. Swedish manufactured Danfoss geothermal and air/water heatpump systems were installed by Heat Pumps Ireland replacing oil boilers in all buildings. Sharp Photovoltaic (PV) electricity generating panels were then installed to provide electricity to run heatpumps.

The project has resulted in improved comfort levels and energy savings in each building,

With many of the community buildings now being used to their full potential.

Hosted by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI), and sponsored by Electric

Ireland, the Awards recognise and reward excellence in energy management. Overall energy savings of €750 million have been made by the 600 organisations that have participated in the Sustainable Energy Awards over the last decade. “These organisations have made massive savings. Given that between them they employ 400,000 people it is impossible to underestimate the importance of this achievement,” said Dr. Brian Motherway, Chief Executive, SEAI.
