The award-winning Smooth Muscle Research Centre (SMRC) at Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) recently attended the International Union of Physiological Science (IUPS) in Frankfurt, Germany, the largest international meeting of physiological scientists, educators and industry partners which is held every four years.

Over 1, 500 attendees from over 70 countries attended the conference from September 10th to 14th, including nine SMRC team members from DkIT. The SMRC at DkIT studies the proteins and mechanisms that control contractions of the airways, urinary system, and reproductive tracts.

The SMRC team presented a diverse portfolio of novel research at the conference, showing the wide range of exciting research areas currently being studied in the centre. PhD students Mitchell Mercer and Srijit Ghosh delivered talks on their recently published research on how specific ion channel proteins might be targeted for erectile dysfunction and asthma.

Dr. Kaneez Rabab, a postdoctoral researcher and PhD students Zainab Baig and Saj Neeraj presented their exciting new findings on potential novel mechanisms on the generation of Parkinsons disease.

PhD students Neha Gupta, Alexandru Mircea and Denzel Thean also presented at the conference, highlighting their work on the urinary tract system and how the SMRC team is delving into novel pathways for treating overactive bladder and urethral dysfunction. SMRC principal investigator Dr. Bernard Drumm presented recently published work from DkIT on using virtual laboratories for undergraduate life science teaching to the IUPS Education and Learning group.

Final year PhD student Neha Gupta said: “I had a wonderful time presenting my research at the IUPS Conference in Frankfurt. It was inspiring to share my findings, connect with researchers from around the world, and attend engaging and interactive sessions on the latest advances in physiology. Many thanks to the organisers for such a fantastic meeting!”
