Dundalk Care Centre praised in HIQA report

Inspectors highlight warm atmosphere, strong staffing and resident wellbeing

Dundalk Care Centre praised in HIQA report

Dundalk Care Centre has received a largely positive report following an unannounced inspection by the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) on May 29th, 2025.

Inspectors found that residents were happy, their rights were respected, and that the nursing home provided a safe and caring environment, though some areas for improvement were identified.

The 130-bed facility, run by Tempowell Limited under the Silver Stream Healthcare group, was found to be compliant in the majority of regulatory areas. Residents and visitors told inspectors that staff were “kind and caring” and that there was now “no shortage of staff.” Families described their interactions with management as positive, noting that the new person-in-charge was approachable and responsive.

Inspectors highlighted the warm atmosphere in the centre, with residents enjoying landscaped gardens, secure courtyards, and a roof garden. Activities were offered daily, with residents praising the variety of options. However, “inspectors also observed some residents sitting in the communal rooms or their bedrooms for long periods of time with minimal opportunities for engagement and activation.”

The inspection found that staffing levels, infection control, safeguarding, and food and nutrition were all compliant. Training records showed that staff were well-prepared, with nurses trained in medication management, CPR, and end-of-life care.

The report identified two areas where the centre was substantially compliant.

Inspectors noted visible wear and tear in some units, including chipped paint and scuffed walls. They also raised concerns about ventilation, with one medication room reaching over 25°C. Management has committed to completing refurbishments and ventilation upgrades by November 30th, 2025.

While overall care plans were person-centred, gaps in documentation were found. In one case, a delayed referral to a specialist posed a potential risk to a resident’s skin integrity. Management has introduced new handover systems and auditing measures to prevent future delays, with full compliance expected by July 1st, 2025.

The report concluded that Dundalk Care Centre was delivering a high standard of care. Residents expressed satisfaction with meals, although some had mixed views on seasoning and spiciness on the inspection day. Bedrooms were described as clean and well-kept, with daily housekeeping in place.

The HIQA report emphasised that the centre is committed to continuous improvement, noting proactive management systems and a clear governance structure.
