Louth County Council held a special meeting on Tuesday to decide rate
Louth councillors have voted to keep the basic rate of Local Property Tax (LPT) as it currently stands for 2026, following a meeting on Tuesday evening.
Louth County Council held a special meeting at the County Hall, to agree a variation to the basic rate of LPT for next year. Legislation permits elected members of a local authority to pass a formal resolution to vary the basic rate of LPT up to a maximum of a 15% increase or 15% decrease.
Cathaoirleach Sean Kelly opened the meeting, confirming its purpose with the members, to consider and formally pass a resolution to vary the basic rate of LPT for 2026.
Cllr Andrea McKevitt proposed that the base rate remain as is, with Cllr Kevin Callan seconding the proposal. A roll call vote was then taken and the resolution passed, with 23 members voting for the proposal. Six councillors were absent from the meeting so could not vote.
Louth County Council had said that according to the latest information available, the value of every 1% change in the basic rate of LPT would amount to €115,251. It would mean that a 5% increase would result in €576,255 additional funding to the local authority, a 10% increase would result in €1,152,510 additional funding, and a 15% increase would result in €1,728,766 in additional funding.
