A driver has been arrested and will face court proceedings after being caught travelling at a staggering 196km/h on the M1 motorway near Dundalk.
Members of the Dundalk Roads Policing Unit intercepted the vehicle and arrested the driver for what Gardaí described as a “ridiculous speed.”
The arrested motorist now faces charges that are expected to lead to a court appearance and potential disqualification from driving.
In a notable development, Gardaí also employed new powers granted under the recently introduced Section 109A of the Road Traffic Act 2023. This legislation allows for the seizure of a vehicle if it is being driven in a dangerous manner.
As a result, the vehicle involved has been taken off the road. The owner must now apply to the local district court to seek its return.
