Cllr Meenan has said that more and more people are ‘falling between the cracks’ when it comes to getting onto the Council Housing List
More and more people are "falling between the cracks" when it comes to getting onto the Louth County Council Housing List, according to Cllr Kevin Meenan and has called for a review of the earnings limits that apply for those seeking to get onto the housing list.
The Sinn Féin councillor spoke on the matter at the Louth County Council March meeting and in comments to the Dundalk Democrat after the meeting, said that, “I have an increasing number of people contacting me who feel they have little or no options when it comes to housing.
"They are unable to get onto the housing list because they are deemed to be earning too much but yet if they attempt to get a mortgage they are being told they are earning too little.”
Cllr Meenan said that “these people have no option but to pay high rents or face homelessness. They are being left with nowhere to turn and are feeling trapped. There needs to be an overhaul of the earnings limits for the housing list and that is up to Central Government to review them so they are more realistic and reflective of the changes in people’s economic circumstances and the general economy over the past number of years.”
