Age Friendly Louth held their first event of 2025 recently where older people in the area were given a gentle introduction to the topic of AI (Artificial Intelligence).
The event took place in the Gallery Meeting Room at Louth County Council’s Civic Offices in Fair St, Drogheda.
The introduction to ‘AI for Beginners’ included a segment on what AI is and outlined how we are already interfacing with AI in our everyday lives, through our smartphones and social media.
The introduction also outlined some of the benefits associated with AI and discussed some of the challenges around AI.
This was followed by a presentation from Paula Kelly from TU Dublin School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
Paula was accompanied by some of her fellow researchers who gave an overview and introduction to their research projects in the area of AI and showcased some of their current projects.
Sinead McVerry, Age Friendly Program Manager said: “The Co Louth Older People’s Council (OPC) have identified the area of AI as one that older people would like more information on.
“This event was a gentle introduction to the topic of AI and also gave the participants a chance to discuss current AI projects with researchers from TU Dublin.”
Joe Grogan, Chairperson of Louth Older People’s Council (OPC) said: “We are hearing about AI constantly on the news and in the media.
“With that in mind, older people must keep up to date with new technological developments, particularly AI, and see how it affects and benefits older people in Co Louth.
The event was the first in what is hoped will be a suite of AI workshops and training provided to older people across Co Louth.
