Inside Track: Young Irelands and Geraldines represented on county’s All-Ireland senior sides

Best-remembered, the All-Ireland 1957 team

Two clubs, Young Irelands and Geraldines, have each been represented on Louth’s three All-Ireland-winning senior teams, Irelands providing four to the 1957 panel.

The Dundalk club had also two players on the 1936 winning minor team, but neither they, nor Gers, have a clubman to cheer for in Armagh as Louth go for a first under-20 (u-21) title tomorrow evening.

In the senior championship’s early years, it was usual for county teams to be backboned by the county champions, thus the huge representation from the Drogheda Tredaghs club on the 1910 and 1912 sides. Young Irelands were the only flag-carriers in the first All-Ireland final, in 1887.

Newtown Blues’ Jim ‘Blackie’ Judge is the only player to have won All-Ireland medals in two grades, senior in 1957 and junior five years later. He was a provincial winner with the minors in 1953, at the time playing for the Cuchulainn’s club in Drogheda.
