Dundalk Golf Club Notes: Connolly the big winner as ladies competitions return

Bobby McCarthy won the 14 Hole Singles Stableford competition held over the weekend of January 8 and 9.

Playing off 9, McCarthy rolled in birdies at the sixth, ninth and 10th and also had eight pars on his way to 37pts which was two points clear of the field.

Divisional honours went to Mickey Coburn (8) with 33pts, Aaron Waite (10) with 35pts and Gearóid Ó Conluain with 32pts. Billy Cairns with two birdies at the sixth and 10th, recorded the best gross score of the competition with 28pts.

Pádraig Ó Gallachóir (10) and Eoin Hamill (25) combined to win the Two Person Team competition sponsored by Tiernan’s Centra, Blackrock, which was played over 14 holes on January 15 and 16.

They were one of the two teams among the 69 who played that returned an excellent score of 40pts and they took first prize on countback from Mickey Coburn (8) and Bill McCarthy (25).

Countback was also needed to decide third place with Brian Ward (12) and Michael Hamilton (15) edging out Gearóid Ó Conluain (15) and Michael Stewart (16) after both had finished on 39pts.    

Saturday, January 8 and Sunday, January 9 – 14 Hole Singles Stableford – Overall: Bobby McCarthy (9) 37pts. Division 1: Michael Coburn (8) 33/21/14pts, Gerry Murray (8) 33, Gerry 33/21/13pts.

Division 2: Aaron Waite (10) 35pts, John McKeever (9) 34pts. Division 3: Gearoid Ó Conluain (14) 32/23pts, John Farrell (14) 32/21pts. Gross Recognition: Billy Cairns (4) 28pts.

Saturday, January 15 and Sunday, January 16 - Two Person 14 Hole Team Competition sponsored by Tiernan’s Centra Blackrock – Overall: Pádraig Ó Gallachóir  (10) & Eoin Hamill (25) 40/29pts, Bill McCarthy (25) & Michael Coburn (8) 40/27pts, Brian Ward (12) & Michael Hamilton (15) 39/27pts, Gearóid Ó Conluain (15) & Michael Stewart (16) 39/26pts.

The golfing year got off to a great start after the Christmas break, with a large entry for both the singles and team competitions. The ever-popular Nollaig na mBan 9 hole singles was played on Saturday, January 8.

Ruth Connolly was the overall winner, returning a super score of 21 points, which included pars on the second, fifth, sixth and ninth holes. Connolly claimed the top spot on countback from Rita Moriarty. Joan Smith won third prize with 20 points.

On Tuesday, January 11, a Three Lady Scramble was played. The winning team, with 32 nett, consisted of Barbara McCourt, Mary Berrills and Caroline Dunne.

Runners up were Lucy Greenan, Bernie Kearney and Teresa Matthews. In third spot were Leone Smyth Baillie, Anne Murray and Pauline Campbell. Well done to all the prize winners.

The Ladies Spring League got off to a great start with a large entry on Saturday, January 17 and Tuesday, January 18. Fantastic scores were returned in all categories on the first week of the five-week league.

Divisional winners were Una Kelly with 34 points, Maeve Ahern with 35 points and Marie McGuigan with 36 points. Congratulations to all prize winners.

Saturday, January 15 & Tuesday January 18 - Spring League Week 1 - Division 1: Una Kelly (19.4) 34pts, Lesley O'Keeffe (19.4) 34pts, Mags Coburn (17.2) 33pts. Division 2: Maeve Ahern (25.2) 35pts, Maura Shelly (26.4) 31pts, Fionnuala Dullaghan (21.1) 30pts.

Division 3: Marie McGuigan (35.3) 36pts, Geraldine Hoare (29.1) 36pts, Angela Kilboy (30.9) 34pts. 9 Hole Competition: Wendy Williamson (23.8) 19pts, Majella Cassidy (24.5) 19pts.
