The killers of journalist Lyra McKee were strongly condemned by Cllr Ruairí Ó Murchú at the annual Easter commemoration in Dundalk.
Cllr Ruairí Ó Murchú said those who carried out the murder of journalist Lyra McKee in Derry last week, were "an impediment to Irish unity". Speaking at the annual Easter Sunday commemoration at the Republican plot at St Patrick’s Cemetery, Cllr Ó Murchú said:
“We cannot let the moment pass without mentioning Derry and paying our respects to Lyra McKee, the 29-year-old journalist who was murdered on Thursday night,” said Ó Murchú. “Sinn Féin stands with her family, her partner Sarah and her many friends.
"The people who carried this out have no support, no strategy and no capacity to engage in a sustained campaign.
"They are not the ‘respectable minority’ that James Connolly spoke of. Fantasists, criminals and the compromised, that is what they are.
"The IRA fought the crown forces, came from and were supported by their community and when the opportunity arose walked off the stage. These people are not the IRA, they are an impediment to Irish unity and they need to stop", Ó Murchú concluded.
