Motion passed to install drinking fountains in public parks in Louth

A motion brought forward by Cllr Mark Dearey at last week's Louth County Council meeting to “install drinking fountains in our public parks and in the future development or regeneration of key civic spaces in towns and villages in Co Louth”, was passed by general agreement by those present at the meeting.

Cllr Dearey in his motion stated that “such an initiative would enhance the urban commons and reduce the generation of single use plastic an subsequent littering”.

While Cllr Dearey's motion saw a general agreement, concerns were voiced. Cllr Peter Savage said he “wouldn't let any of his drink from a fountain anyone uses”.

Cllr Anne Campbell agreeing with the motion said that there was one installed and working in Fingal already, with Cllr Marianne Butler saying that there was one in Lordship that was “very handy”.

In its reply to the motion, Louth County Council said it would examine the matter and give consideration to a pilot scheme.
