If you go down to Tesco Extra today you might get a big surprise - an avocado the size of your head.
Tesco Ireland has announced that they will be selling Avozillas, giant avocado five times the size of a normal fruit, in 80 stores across Ireland, including the Dundalk store from this morning.
But avocado lovers are being urged to snap them up as there are very limited supplies.
Tesco says: "There is a limited supply of these giant avocados, which are approximately five times the size of a regular avocado, so avocado fans are encouraged to snap them up quickly this weekend while stocks last as when they are gone they are gone.
"Priced at €4 these giant avocados are ideal for large families for making a family sized portion of guacamole, or perfect for avocado aficionados keen to impress dinner guests with a prawn and avocado starter."
Tesco Ireland Fresh food buyer Ciaran Doyle said: “This limited stock of Avozillas is exclusive to Tesco. They are extremely rare and come from just four trees grown by one of the world’s biggest suppliers of avocados in South Africa. Deliveries will be going into eighty of our stores across the country on Friday morning and will be available this weekend while stocks last.”
Avozillas are naturally produced and not genetically modified. Just four trees produce the Avozilla supply in the lush forest outside of Modjadjiskloof, Limpopo, South Africa. The Avozilla is a cross between two types of avocado; the West Indian and Guatemalen varieties.
As these trees are not available for commercial sale, there is very limited supply of the fruit at the moment.
