Six presidential hopefuls to meet Louth County Council next week

The Dundalk Democrat can reveal that a special meeting of Louth County Council has been convened for Wednesday 5 September, to allow prospective candidates for the next presidential election, address Louth councillors.

Six prospective candidates have requested to address the council to date.

They are as follows:

Gavin Duffy

Joan Freeman

John Groarke

Marie Goretti Moylan

Gemma O'Doherty

Kevin Sharkey

Should the writ for the presidential election be issued, members can then propose who they wish to nominate as a presidential candidate, with a vote taking place if more than one candidate is proposed.

Potential candidates for the election require the support of four local authorities or the backing of 20 members of the Oireachtas.

According to RTE News reports, it is thought that the writ for the election may be issued as early as today.
