Huge increase in number of homes granted planning in Louth

Planning permission was granted for 1,234 homes in Louth in the second quarter of this year

There was an 84% increase in the number of homes granted planning permission in Louth in the second quarter (Q2) of this year, according to figures released today by the Central Statistics Office (CSO).

Figures in the CSO release, Planning Permissions Quarter 2 2024, show that planning permission was granted for 1,234 homes in Louth in Q2 of this year, up from 670 in the first quarter (Q1), representing an 84% increase on Q1. Of the 1,234 homes planted planning permission, 650 were houses, up from 452 in Q1, and 584 were apartments, up from 218 in Q1.

Of the 650 houses granted planning permission, 611 were multi-development houses, up from 413 in Q1. 207 were one off houses, this is down 18% however on the 252 one off houses granted planning permission in Louth in Q1 of this year.

Comparing Q2 of this year to Q2 of 2023, the 650 houses granted planning permission in Q2 2024 represents a 35% increase on the 481 houses granted planning permission in Q2 2023, while the 584 apartments granted planning permission in Q2 of this year is more than double the 262 apartments granted planning in Louth in Q2 of last year.

Planning permission has been granted for a total of 1,904 homes in Louth in the first half of this year, 1,102 houses, and 802 apartments. This is down slightly on the 1,112 houses granted planning in the second half of last year, but up significantly on the 622 apartments granted planning during the same period.

Nationally, there was an annual decrease of 2.4% in the total number of dwelling units approved in Q2 2024 to 8,513 units, down from 8,723 units in Q2 2023. Houses accounted for 59% of all dwelling units granted planning permission in Q2 2024, while apartments made up the remaining 41%.

In Q2 2024, the number of houses granted planning permission rose by more than 36% when compared with Q2 2023, while in contrast, apartment approvals declined by 31%. There was an annual rise of more than 52% in the number of multi-development houses receiving planning permission from 2,530 units in Q2 2023 to 3,852 units in Q2 2024.

There was an annual increase of 2% in the number of one-off houses receiving planning permission in Q2 2024 compared with an annual decrease of more than 9% in Q1 2024.
