The locations of a number of controlled traffic light junctions and controlled pedestrian crossings in Dundalk to be upgraded, as part of a traffic light replacement programme, was revealed to councillors at the Dundalk Municipal District May meeting on Tuesday.
Cllr Marianne Butler had submitted a question to Louth County Council ahead of the May meeting, seeking information on the amount spent and locations of systems being upgraded. Cllr Butler asked the local authority:
"Under the three year Capital Programme (2024-2026), a total of €1.4 million (€350k for each year) is allocated from the Revenue Budget for 'Traffic Lights Replacement Programme Phase 2'. Can you outline what has been spent in 2023 under this heading, and the spend year to date in 2024. Please give details of exact locations that have benefitted from this funding."
Replying to Cllr Butler's question, Director of Placemaking & Physical Development, Mr David Jones, said that: "Funding has been provided in the Capital Programme 2024-2026 for a traffic light replacement programme relating to the traffic light infrastructure in Dundalk, to be completed over a number of years.
"The programme encompasses the upgrade of existing controlled traffic light junctions and controlled pedestrian crossings including associated civil works, traffic management and electrical works, with circa 25 locations to be targeted under this upgrade programme.
"No works were completed under this programme in 2023, however preparatory work commenced regarding site selection based on completed surveys of the traffic light infrastructure in Dundalk and finalising technical specifications associated with the proposed works.
"A Request for Tender for 2024 works under this programme is due to be published in May 2024, with the following initial locations to be targeted for upgrade: Park Street/Francis Street junction; Pedestrian Crossing, Francis Street; Crowe Street/Roden Place junction; The Long Walk and The Long Walk/McSweeny Street Junction."
