MANNAN CASTLE LADIES

Golfers are used to sand but usually in the bunkers! Essential sanding of some fairways added an extra challenge to all players this week which was reflected in the overall scoring.

With the confidence of youth Natasha McCahey attacked the course at the weekend and encountered few impediments to building the top score this week. Scoring on all but one hole led to a fine winning total of 37 points.

Jo Barry was the best on Wednesday by keeping her foot steady on the gas and taking something from all eighteen holes to finish with 35 points.

Two players finished with 33 points with Madeleine Devine claiming third spot on countback on the back nine, now if only she didn't scratch the eighteenth hole.

Congratulations to the winners and well played to everyone.

Many thanks to this week's sponsor Shoe City, Castleblaney. Please support the businesses that support us.

MANNAN CASTLE SENIORS

The reign of Tommy Duffy as captain of the Mannan Castle seniors came to a close on Tuesday when a large field of eager golfers contested his captain's prize over 10 holes.

Weather conditions were perfect when the horn was sounded and the shotgun tee off took place and over 50 seniors did battle.

Following the golf and the traditional group photo on the entrance steps to the clubhouse a lovely meal was served by the Castle Restaurant staff.

The craic was mighty and much slagging went on when various scores were revealed.

The presentation followed and Captain Tommy welcomed everyone and especially Club Captain Barry Conroy and Club President Dick Bourke. He then presented the prizes.

The overall winner was Con Hanneffy whose good form continued following his recent Professionals Prize victory.

However, he was pushed very hard by Gerry Smyth with both finishing on 24 points.

They had to be separated by countback.

Con's birdies on the 16th and 17th holes proved decisive giving him a back 5 of 12 points to Gerry's 11.

Also among the prizes was Joe Harlin whose 23 points was close to being in contention for the main prize and was the deserving winner of category 2.

It was an equally close race for Golfer of the Year where Joe Mullen and Eddie Rouiller were tied. The best score on the day decided the outcome and Joe prevailed.

In the AGM that followed Tommy acknowledged everyone who helped and supported him during the year.

He praised the great work that John McBride and his staff together with the Gangers had done to have the course in such excellent condition.

He welcomed all who had joined the seniors during the year and hoped they had an enjoyable time and met new friends. He recognised that new members were the lifeblood of the seniors, and it was great to see it going from strength to strength.

He noted the success of the SUSA and Kennedy Trophy teams, managed by Fergal Brady and Denis Murphy and wished them a successful conclusion to the current competitions.

He thanked club professional Kevin and Thereze and Geraldine in the office for all their help during the year.

He also thanked Angela Gartlan for her help as club PRO and photographer.

In the election of officers for the coming year the ever-popular Denis Murphy was unanimously elected as captain and Joe Mullen will continue as secretary/treasurer.

Category 1: Gerry Smyth (11) 24pts

Category 2: Joe Harlin (14) 23pts

HILTON SHIELD

Victory is sweet but it was hard fought and was a long time coming.

Five brave souls, ten counting the opposition, took to the course on a day of Biblical levels of rain to decide which club would hold the Hilton Shield Senior trophy for 2023.

Going into the second leg of the final, Mannan Castle held a good lead but County Cavan will always provide determined opposition especially on their home patch.

There was lots of excellent golf on display; the matches were all very close and played in good spirits.

In the end, Mannan secured the points needed to take the win and bring  the trophy back to Donaghmoyne for the first time since 2014.

If it takes a village to raise a child, it takes a strong panel to win a Senior Hilton Shield.

Over the four sessions, every one listed started at least one match, some two, others three, Gill Rouiller, Jo Morris, Jo Barry, Mary Cassidy, Marie Finnegan, Mary MacNamee, Rita O'Loughlin, Bríanán Kingham, Geraldine Finnegan, Madeleine Devine. Each and everyone contributed to Mannan Castle winning the Senior Shield this year.
