Mannan Castle Golf Notes: Gavin Gonnelly wins Teresa Butler's Captain's Prize to the Men

Mannan Castle Golf Notes: Denise McGuinness takes the spoils in tough conditions

Mannan Castle Golf Course

At the second time of asking, Teresa Butler got her wish for some decent weather for her Captain’s Prize to the Men, after having it cancelled in mid-July due to some unseasonable conditions. The members of Mannan came out in force and with that, the scoring was exceptional.

The third major of the year went to Gavin Gonnelly with an excellent score of 43pts. Gavin played the final seven holes in level par, bringing his points total for the back nine to 23pts.

In second position and losing on the count back was the in-form Michael Burns. Fresh from the captain’s playoff last weekend, Michael continued his fine form shooting a brilliant 43pts on Sunday morning.

Anthony Burns finished in third spot with a great score of 42pts. The score of the weekend went the way of Tomas Pepper, who shot a 5 under par round of 65 which got him 40pts. Tomas has been playing brilliantly of late, and no doubt he’ll continue to post scores of this standard again.

Lady Captain Teresa’s prize to the Men 12th /13th August: 1st Gavin Gonnelly (PH.16), 43pts c/b, 2nd Michael Burns (PH.21) 43pts, 3rd Anthony Burns (PH.24) 42pts. Gross: Tomas Pepper (PH.+1) 65pts. Nearest to the Pin: Kevin Butler. Longest Drive: Ryan Donagher.

MANNAN CASTLE SENIORS

Mannan Castle Seniors gathered in Ballymascanlon Hotel for their annual competition for the Paddy Martin Perpetual Cup.

Paddy, who was a former seniors captain and secretary, was fondly remembered by those present who knew him. Many stories were told during the after-golf meal.

A fine turnout of 42 senior golfers did battle over the hotel fairways, which were as usual well presented. This led to excellent scoring with Eddie Rouiller (27) and Peter Marquis (28) scoring 41 and 40 points respectively.

A group of six players finished on 39 points which included Jimmy McMahon (18), Joe Harlin (29), Sam Duffy (34), Terry Doherty (29), Joe Mullen (23) and Oliver Fox (15).

However, head and shoulders above everyone else was Gerry Corbally who hit form at just the right time to post a remarkable score of 47 points.

As Gerry was in the first group out, he certainly blazed a trail that nobody could live with. He had two 4 pointers and seven 3 pointers on a card which was error free. A well-deserved win for a popular club member.

MANNAN CASTLE LADIES

It was nip and tuck at the top this week with strong scoring right throughout the field, but six three pointers and one four pointer helped Siobhan Hand come out on top on countback from Mary McCabe, who also had six three pointers for the day, with both finishing on 37 points.

Landing in third, also on countback, Dearbhla Crawley recorded two four pointers and one five pointer in her round to make it to the podium with 36 pts from the weekend play.

Congratulations to all the winners and well done to everyone who played and enjoyed their round without rain for a change.
