A local man who admitted a series of shoplifting incidents in the town, was last week sentenced to eight months at Dundalk district court with the final two months suspended.
The defence solicitor asked Judge Eirinn McKiernan to consider involving the Probation Service with Conor Agnew of Fatima Drive, Dundalk, who she said has been in and out of custody his adult life.
The 30 year old was sentenced for stealing five bottles of vodka from Aldi on the Ramparts Road on April 19th last, the theft of a Tommy Tippee product worth €99.99 from Dunnes, Marshes Shopping on May 9th last and three bottles of Agent Provocateur perfume from Guiney's, Clanbrassil Street a week later.
However, he was also before the court for stealing a Manchester United jersey from Brendan Reid footwear on Park Street on May 6th, when he ran off down the road.
He was also charged with a public order offence for using threatening, abusive or insulting behaviour towards a member of staff two days later.
Conor Agnew also stole two Oral B electric toothbrushes worth €60each from McCormack's Pharmacy at the Fairways on May 12th and five tubs of baby formula from Dunnes in Ard Easmuinn the next day.
He had 106 previous convictions, and the Defence solicitor said he has underlying difficulties with alcohol and gambling and has been in and out of custody for his adult life and from his late teens.
She added that he falls back into the same routine and in with the same peer group, when he's released and he's trying to get the help that he needs.
The solicitor asked the court to suspend a portion of the sentence, with the Probation Service supervision as she said when he gets out and finds himself with no services, it's a vicious circle.
Judge McKiernan imposed a two month jail term for the vodka theft charge, a two month consecutive sentence for the first Dunnes theft and a four month consecutive sentence for the Guineys charge with the final two months suspended on Mr. Agnew entering a 12 month Probation supervision bond.
