The number of crimes recorded in the Robbery, Extortion and Hijacking Offences category recorded in the Louth Garda Division, have risen dramatically, according to the latest crime statistics released by the Central Statistics Office last week.

The largest increase was seen in the first quarter of this year, when 25 offences were recorded, up from 14 in the final quarter of 2022 and up from 15 in the first quarter of 2022.
The largest increase was seen in Robbery from the Person, with 31 offences recorded in the year to Q1 2023, more than double the 15 recorded in the Louth Garda Division the year previous.
Ten of these offences occurred in the first quarter of this year, up from seven in the final quarter of 2022 and up from three in the first quarter of 2022.
Robbery of an Establishment or Institution also saw a huge increase, with 27 offences recorded in the Louth Garda Division in the year to Q1 2023, up from 15 a year previous, representing an 80% increase.
There was a fall however, in Blackmail or Extortion offences (27.8% fall) and Carjacking, Hijacking/ Unlawful seizure of Aircraft/Vessel offences (33.3% fall) in Louth.
Nationally, Robbery, Extortion and Hijacking offences rose by 20% in the year to Q1 2023.
Commenting on the Recorded Crime Quarter 1 2023 publication, Jim Dalton, Statistician in the Crime & Criminal Justice Section, said that "data for 2020 and 2021 for some crime categories are likely to have been influenced by the public health restrictions imposed as a result of COVID-19.”
Recorded Crime statistics continue to be categorised as Statistics Under Reservation. This categorisation indicates that the quality of these statistics do not meet the standards required of official statistics published by the CSO.
