Councillor Maeve Yore described the rise in sexual offences as “worrying” at Tuesday’s meeting of Dundalk Joint Policing Committee.
The figures presented to the meeting showed that sexual offences for the year to date in the Dundalk area stood at 20 compared to the figure at this time last year of 16.
Cllr Yore asked that the JPC send a clear message that laws need reforming to better support victims.
Superintendent Armstrong assured the meeting that domestic abuse and related violence was taken very seriously, saying:
“We made a commitment when I came to the district to reach out to the local organisations which we have done and we routinely and regularly are in touch with them.
“Since my time here we’ve established a domestic abuse team in Dundalk staffed by full time guards.
“I can assure you that if there is a domestic abuse incident tonight in Dundalk either myself or one of my senior management will review that incident on a daily basis.”
