Water Safety Louth issues plea for safety ahead of June Bank Holiday weekend
Chairperson of Water Safety Louth, Cllr Andrea McKevitt, has issued a plea for the public to take care at beaches, lakes and pools ahead of the June Bank Holiday weekend and asks everyone to, "Be Safe at the Water this Summer".
Cllr McKevitt said, ''As the June Bank Holiday approaches, this means our Blue Flag Beaches in Clogherhead, Port and Templetown beaches will be patrolled by lifeguards during weekends in June, and then additionally during the week for the months of July and August, it is vital we always do as advised by Lifeguards in the interest of everyone’s safety.
"It is wonderful to see so many people enjoying our lovely beaches here in County Louth but always pay attention to the signage at these locations to ensure safety for all.
"We all know how much fun pier jumping can be, but always check on the tide times before you decide to take the plunge to check that there is adequate water there for jumping in. If ringbuoys are missing, report to Louth County Council or Water Safety, and remember a stolen ringbuoy is a stolen life.
"We strongly discourage the use of inflatables at open water spaces as these often drift outwards and if people follow these can end up in difficulty. If you are heading out with new boating equipment always test to ensure everything is working correctly before going on a long journey.
"We would also ask people to be mindful where they are parking if heading to the beaches over the coming days, don't block roadways or entrances, and always ensure there is space for traffic to flow, as who knows when emergency services may need to attend these areas.''
"We would encourage people to go and chat to the lifeguards this summer, and if you have any questions about water safety ask them, they really are a wonderful source of information to help keep you, your family and friends safe this Summer.
"The Coast Guards can be reached on 112 and Emergency Services on 999.
"We at Water Safety Louth hope everyone has a safe and joyful summer."
