Clogherhead RNLI rescues two sailors after 30ft yacht breaks down

The volunteer crew of Clogherhead RNLI were requested to launch their all-weather lifeboat at 11.08am on Saturday (13 May) by Carlingford Coast Guard and asked to go to the aid of the couple after their vessel encountered engine problems approximately seven to eight nautical miles from Kilkeel.

The couple were on route to Howth when the yacht got into difficulty.

Weather conditions at the time were foggy with light variable winds, calm seas and visibility was three miles.

The lifeboat launched immediately under Coxswain Sean Flanagan and with five crew members onboard and made its way to the scene.

On arrival, the crew observed that the man and woman onboard were safe and well. Having assessed the situation, a decision was made to put a lifeboat crew member onboard the casualty vessel to help establish a towline.

Once the tow was successfully set up, the lifeboat proceeded to bring the yacht and her crew to the nearest safe port at Clogherhead where all onboard arrived safely at 4pm.

Speaking following the call out, Clogherhead RNLI Coxswain Sean Flanagan said:

"The couple did the right thing in calling for help when they knew they needed it, and we were delighted to help and bring them to safety.

"Ahead of the summer season, we would remind anyone planning a trip or activity at sea to ensure they go prepared before venturing out. Ensure vessels and engines are checked for safety and always make sure you have enough fuel for your trip.

"Always wear a lifejacket or suitable floatation device for your activity and always carry a means of calling for help such as a VHF radio or mobile phone in a waterproof pouch. Always let someone on the shore know where you are going and when you are due back. And should you get into difficulty or see someone else in trouble, dial 999 or 112 and ask for the Coast Guard."
