MANNAN CASTLE SENIORS
With the weather continuing to be cooperative, the biggest field of seniors ever played in Mannan Castle Seniors Tuesday's 9-hole competition.
Despite three putting from a short distance on the last hole, Michael McBride's round more than made up for the lapse. A total of five pars on his card contributed to a final score of 21 points to take the overall winner's prize.
Richard Mulholland won category 1, even though he had a one point deduction. He finished with a nett 19 points and won on countback from Finbarr Boylan, thanks in large part to pars on each of the final three holes.
There was also a countback winner in category 2 where Richard's brother Arthur finished ahead of Peter Sloan, prevailing by a single point. Peter's failure to score on the 14th and a single point on the 15th proved to be decisive.
Result Tuesday 28th February (9 hole handicaps): Overall: Michael McBride (9) 21pts, Category Richard Mulholland (6) 19pts c/b, Category 2: Arthur Mulholland (10) 20pts.
MANNAN CASTLE LADIES
Biting cold and imminent snow didn't deter Evelyn Brady from running hot on her way to being this week's winner. Evelyn amassed 29 points over the thirteen holes to finish well ahead of the rest of the field.
The nearest contender was Mary McCabe who included a couple of pars in a consistent round and her 26 points total was enough to take the second spot.
Entering the final week of the Spring League, the outcome is very much in the balance with three teams still in contention for the title.
Favourites the Painted Lady team go into the seventh week just out in front with Speckled Wood and Meadow Brown currently neck and neck for that second prize.
Meanwhile, at the other end, pride is very much at stake with a couple of teams in the unenviable position of vying to avoid the wooden spoon. After weeks of ups and downs, the final week promises a few more twists and turns and an exciting finish before the Winners are decided.
Spring Weekly 13 Hole Stb 4th March 2023: 1st Evelyn Brady (40) 29 pts, 2nd Mary McCabe (25) 26 pts.
