Councillor Maria Doyle has stepped down from her position as Louth County Councillor. In a statement to the Dundalk Democrat, Cllr Doyle said:

"I am announcing my intention to step down as a member of Louth County Council. It has been a privilege to have been a public representative for almost 12 years and working with so many fantastic groups and individuals in our community has been a wonderful experience.

"Although the time is right now for me to step away, I will continue to be an active member of Fine Gael and will give my successor whatever support I can. I’d like to thank everyone that has supported me over the years including my party colleagues on Louth County Council, both past and present.

"I’d also like to thank staff of Louth County Council for their assistance with many issues over the years. Finally, I’d like to thank my family and friends for their unwavering support. I will be standing down as soon as the party have secured a replacement."

Cllr Doyle started out as a Fine Gael councillor on Dundalk Town Council, representing Dundalk East in 2011, when she was co-opted onto the Council in July 2011 to replace Senator Jim D’Arcy. She has since been elected to serve on the Council in 2014 and 2019, starting out on Dundalk Town Council, representing Dundalk East.
