Coláiste Chú Chulainn in Dundalk  takes top spots in regional Applied Mathematics competition

Regional Winners: Coláiste Chú Chulainn students King Farinas, Jack Kilbride, Lorcán Garvin and Anastasija Markova with Mr Brendan O’Donoghue and Mr Daniel Gallagher.

Dundalk school Coláiste Chú Chulainn took first and second place in the regional Applied Mathematics Problem Solving competition last week.

On the 19th of January, 11 students from Coláiste Chú Chulainn took part in the regional problem-solving competition for the Irish Applied Mathematics Teachers Association (IAMTA) hosted by the Marist college, Dundalk.

This is an annual competition with winners progressing to a national final.

There were four schools in attendace from Louth and Dublin.

The winning team of Lorcán Garvin, King Farinas, Jack Kilbride and Anastasija Markova took 1st place with a score of 39 points, among the highest scores recorded nationally.

Second place was taken by Cedric Saavedra, Finnian Oakes, Jonathan Gibson and Eimantas Lingis.

The winning team now goes onto the national final in Athlone Community College on March 25th with a good chance of the second team also qualifying.

Mr Daniel Gallagher, the school’s teacher of Applied Mathematics and Mathematics stated: “This is an excellent achievement for the school and our students.

"We came new to the competition last year and won first place.

"The students set an action plan to recruit and enter additional teams and set an ambition to increase their impact on the competition.

“Applied Mathematics is a rewarding subject that complements engineering, physics and mathematics to name but a few. We look forward to meeting schools from all across the island in the national finals.

Colaiste Chu Chulainn was also represented by the high scoring trio of Lochlann Mattison, Cillian Naylor and Alice Adeyemo.
