Cllr Reilly highlights tourist confusion locating Faughart Shrine via Google Maps

Cllr John Reilly at Faughart Graveyard

Cllr John Reilly raised the matter of tourist confusion regarding the location of Faughart Graveyard and Faughart Shrine on Google Maps, at the Dundalk Municipal District January meeting.

Cllr Reilly told the meeting that tourists are having problems finding Faughart Shrine and Graveyard and distinguishing between the two. Cllr Reilly claims that on several visits to the graveyard, he has had conversations with tourists who did not know where Faughart Shrine was, as St Brigid's Well is located in the graveyard, which is approximately 1km away from Faughart Shrine.

The Dundalk-Carlingford councillor who is from the area, enquired about some signage at the area to help tourists find their way around.

In response, Director of Services, Thomas McEvoy told the meeting that Louth County Council is currently looking at how all the various sites in County Louth are represented online and focusing on any that were not mapping to where they should be.

Mr McEvoy said that the Council is in the middle of that process and has engaged with Google Maps and MapQuest on the matter. He added that changes have taken effect and the locations are now fixed online.

The Director of Services further added that the local authority is in the process of procuring signs for between the two sites, as well as for the approach to the sites, and that he hoped they should soon be on the way.
