Mannan Castle Open Club Classic
Spread over three days, our Club Classic proved to be a fantastic success, a huge thanks to all our sponsors for this event. The course was in fabulous condition, but perhaps the rain on Saturday dampened the day.
Golfers who played Friday and Saturday enjoyed a delicious carvery meal; those who played on Sunday were treated to a delicious barbecue, which included Chef Nav’s signature ‘Pig on a Spit’.

Mannan Castle Seniors
Jimmy Courtney Memorial Salver
Mannan Castle Seniors played their final major of the season on Tuesday last. Over 60 senior golfers gathered to compete for the Jimmy Courtney Memorial Salver.
They remembered their good friend and founder member for his enthusiasm for and pride in the club. He was especially proud of the course and would have been delighted to see how magnificent it looked on a beautiful autumn day.
The honour of winning the big prize was fiercely contested, and it took the countback to separate the main contenders. Fred Fitzsimons (PH26) came out on top thanks to an error-free 10 holes, scoring 22 points.
Last year's winner, Con Hanneffy (PH14), came within a whisker of retaining the trophy, but a double bogey on his final hole proved costly. Tom Fox (PH25) was also undone by the same hole with a failure to score.
In his acceptance speech, Fred said he was greatly honoured to win the Jimmy Courtney Memorial Salver and remarked that Jimmy would have been proud of the course his tournament was played on. Everyone enjoyed refreshments after the golf, beautifully presented by Evelyn Brady.
Tuesday 16th September Jimmy Courtney Memorial – 10 Hole: 1st: Fred Fitzsimons (26) 22pts c/b; 2nd: Con Hanneffy (14) 22pts c/b; 3rd: Tom Fox (25) 22pts.
Tuesday's Seniors competition in Mannan Castle was played over 13 holes and was as competitive as ever.
Joe Mullen (PH23) led the field home with a good score of 30 points. A great day with the flat stick was the main reason for his win.
The only hiccup on his card was at the par-5 fourth hole, where he failed to recover from a bad tee shot. The highlights were great up and downs on the tenth and thirteenth for par.
Arthur Mulholland (PH20) wasn't far behind Joe with an excellent 28 points. A poor first hole was followed by a par on the second with further pars on five and eight before finishing with another on thirteen. This was good for victory in category 2.
The next best card was recorded by Sean O'Hagan (PH37) in category 3. He was the clear winner of the category prize. Sean had five 3-point holes in his round and played steady golf throughout.
Despite having a two-point deduction as a category winner the previous week, Philip McEntee (PH16) with 24 points (26-2) was victorious once again in category 1. He played steady golf with two 1-point holes balanced by two 3-point holes.
Tuesday 30th Sept -13 hole Competition; Overall: Joe Mullen (23) 30pts; Category 1: Philip McEntee (16) 24pts (26-2); Category 2: Arthur Mulholland (20) 28pts; Category 3: Sean O'Hagan (37) 27pts.
Mannan Castle Ladies
What could be better than having two birdies in your round? Why, having two birdies and an eagle, of course!
So it was for Jo Barry, who had a birdie on the 3rd, a birdie on the 12th, followed by a chip-in eagle on the par-4 13th. Nine points in two holes boosted Jo's total to 37 points, making her the top scorer of the week.
Heading Division 1 with 34 points, Siobhan Hand had a rare error on the 10th but immediately bounced back, earning 4 points on the 11th.
In Division 2, coming up short on a couple of holes on the front nine didn't prove too costly for Imelda Hanratty. She got cracking on the back nine, scoring handsomely to finish with 35 pts. Monday's 9-hole competition was won by Margaret Crawley.
Women's 18 Hole sponsored by McKenna Agri 1st October 2025 - Top Score: Jo Barry (20) 38 pts c/b; Division 1: Siobhan Hand (23) 36pts; Division 2: Cepta Maddick (27) 38 pts.
Congratulations to the winners and many thanks to this week's kind and welcome sponsor of the competition, McKenna Agri, Carrickmacross https://www.facebook.com/mckennaspares/
