Kate O’Connor has finished an exceptional season by being named the 2025 Irish Times/Sport Ireland Sportswoman of the Year at the awards ceremony at the Shelbourne Hotel, Dublin on Friday.
The Dundalk-based athlete has won medals at all four major championships that she competed in 2025. Her standout moment came at the World Championships in Tokyo, where she won silver in the heptathlon.

That performance made her the first Irish athlete to win a senior outdoor multi-event medal and only the sixth Irish athlete ever to medal at an outdoor World Championships.
O'Connor told BBC: “My ultimate goal is to get to the Olympics and to be on the podium and try to win a gold medal. I think if you’re not imagining yourself doing that, you’re never going to get it.
“I’m going to work really hard until I get there. I fully believe that I can do it. Although I did great things this year, I know there is so much more there. I’m just going to continue building and see what else I can do.”
