Dundalk athlete Geraldine Finegan shattered the word decathlon record for women over-55 in the Netherlands.
In a breathtaking display of athleticism, determination, and grit, 59-year-old Geraldine A. Finegan has shattered the world record in the women’s over-55 decathlon, scoring a remarkable 6,869 points - nearly 500 points above the previous record of 6,250 held by an Australian athlete.
Finegan’s performance took place at a fiercely contested event in Reusel, Netherlands, where she stood out among a field of 16 competitors that included not only her age-group peers but also younger male athletes, some as young as 18 and others as old as 60.

Despite the diverse and competitive lineup, it was the seasoned Irish athlete who stole the spotlight.
“This was my last chance before turning 60, and I gave it everything,” Finegan said after the event, beaming with exhaustion and pride. “Breaking the world record at this stage in life - it’s beyond a dream.”
The decathlon, a gruelling ten-event test of strength, speed, and endurance across two days, saw Finegan deliver a powerful Day One performance, establishing a strong lead early.
However, Day Two presented unexpected challenges, as she picked up a minor injury. Still, with characteristic resilience, she pushed through the discomfort.
Adding to the challenge was a strong headwind of -2.5 m/s during the pole vault—conditions that could have rattled a less-experienced athlete. Yet Finegan adapted, fought on, and maintained her momentum.
Her standout performances came in the 80m hurdles, shot put, and javelin events, where she not only led her age group but also outperformed several younger male competitors.
“I’ve been training hard, two hours a day, every day,” she shared. “This was about testing the limits - not just mine, but the limits of what people think women over 55 can do.”
Finegan’s historic score of 6,869 points sets a new global benchmark and caps a long and passionate journey in athletics.
Her record is now etched in history, a testament to lifelong commitment and the spirit of competition that transcends age. With the world watching, Geraldine Finegan has proven that excellence has no expiration date.
