Stephen Fitzpatrick won the Dundalk Golf Club Singles Stableford competition held over the weekend of June 14 and 15 by one point. Playing off 18, Fitzpatrick shot 42pts and that was enough to separate him from a group of four players on 41pts.
The foundations for his winning round were laid on the front nine, which he covered in 23 points, thanks to six three-point pars at the second, third, fifth, sixth, seventh, and ninth holes.

He could only manage two further three-point pars on the 14th and 18th but it was those three points on the final hole that got him to 42pts and gave him the overall victory.
Joseph Laverty (1), Desmond McKeown (9), Brendan Keane (12) and Cathal Purcell (13) all shot 41 points and it was Laverty who took the runners-up spot on countback after posting a back nine of 21 points.
Laverty also carded the best gross score of the competition, 40 points, which equated to a bogey-free four under par 68, with birdies coming on the sixth, tenth, 12th, and 15th holes.
McKeown and Keane were both level on the back nine countback, but McKeown edged the back six to take first place in Division 1 with Keane second while Purcell’s 41pts was enough to win Division 2 from Peter Cunningham (18).
The Division Three winner was Paul Lynch (21) who edged out Paul Heaney (22) on countback after both had shot 40pts. Alan Joynt (21) served up an impressive card to win the Wednesday Singles Stableford sponsored by McKenna Man.
After a three-point bogey at the index one-fourth, he finished the front nine with back-to-back three-point pars at the eighth and ninth to turn in 19pts.
That was good for starters and the main course was three consecutive three-point pars on the 12th, 13th and 14th before he served up two more three-point pars at 17 and 18 as he came home in 22 points for an overall score of 41 points.
That left him one point clear of Bernard Laverty (8) who did everything he could to catch Joynt including two three-point birdies at the 10th and 18th and an eagle two for four points at the par four 14th.
It was a brave effort by Laverty but he was left to rue a blank at the second which ultimately cost him overall victory.
Shane Hession (2), Tom Cunniffee (20) and Derek Williams (23) were the gross winners while Caolan Rafferty had five birdies and no bogeys in carding the day’s best gross score of 41pts.
On the inter-club front, the North Leinster Mixed Foursomes team had a 3.5 to 1.5 win over Mullingar in their first-round match with wins for Briege Renaghan and Michael Hamilton, Violet McGeady and John McGeady and Maura Coyle and Gearoid Ó Conluain.
The Men’s Leinster Senior Fourball team play County Louth Golf Club at 16:20 while the Boy's Foursomes team play Laytown & Bettystown on Sunday at 15:10.
Also on this weekend is the Junior Scratch Cup sponsored by Building Information Ireland which marks the start of Open Week. Entries for all competitions are via the BRS system.
