A number of defendants failed to appear to meet their case at Dundalk District Court as the ongoing action by solicitors carrying out criminal legal aid work continued

"We'll have to take out a big notice board in Drogheda and Dundalk saying the judge is not on strike", Judge Nicola Andrews said at Dundalk district court last week.

A number of defendants failed to appear to meet their case as the ongoing action by solicitors carrying out criminal legal aid work continued.

Over 20 cases that were listed for hearing were adjourned to April 28th next year while bench warrants were issued for a further five defendants who failed to attend court.

The action by solicitors has seen the flat fee that was originally proposed being increased from €455 to €520.

Before the change came into force on July 1st solicitors were paid just under €240 for the first appearance and almost €60 for each subsequent hearing.
