A 39-year-old man has appeared in court charged in connection with a drug seizure in north Louth.

A special sitting of Dundalk district court heard how a number of bars of solid silver and a quantity of cash was also seized during a planned search on Easter Sunday.

Brendan Duffy of Knockagh, Hackballscross was before the court charged with having cannabis and cocaine for sale or supply, and unlawful possession of the drugs at the same address on Sunday, April 5th.

The contested bail hearing was told the drugs involved had an estimated street value of €7,000, the sum of cash seized amounted to €87,000 and each of the three silver bars recovered, are worth €2,100.

Judge Stephanie Coggans fixed bail on the defendant's own bond of €20,000, with a €10,000 cash lodgement, and an independent surety of €20,000 to be approved by the court.

Under the bail terms he must observe a curfew from 11pm to 7am, surrender his passport and give an undertaking not to apply for any duplicate travel documents. He must also be contactable by gardaí at all times by mobile phone.

After the Defence barrister said while there was no difficulty with the amount, but providing the cash lodgement would be problematic due to the bank holiday, Judge Coggans remanded the accused in custody with consent to bail, to Dundalk District Court tomorrow (Wednesday) where he will be produced before the court in person.
