Network Louth and AIB hold cyber security event

Network Ireland Louth, in partnership with AIB, recently hosted a highly engaging and informative event entitled “Click Smart, Stay Sharp!” at AIB's Drogheda branch on Dyer Street. The event attracted a large audience keen to learn about the growing threats of cybercrime and how to stay safe online.

The evening's panel discussion was expertly moderated by Audrey O’Doherty, Branch Manager, AIB Drogheda, with insights from cybersecurity experts Fran Hoban, Simon Toland, and Johnny Miliken. The discussion provided practical advice on identifying and avoiding online scams, especially in the lead-up to Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and the busy Christmas shopping period.

Simon Toland, Head of Governance for Technology and Data AIB, emphasised the urgency of vigilance, stating, “It’s important not to be complacent.” He highlighted the tactics used by cybercriminals such as, time-limited offers or low-stock warnings  designed to pressure consumers into clicking on malicious links in ads or emails.

Fran Hoban, Garda Cybercrime Bureau, shared a series of essential tips for staying safe while shopping online. Hogan advised attendees to:

• Check for “https” in website URLs
• Look for the lock symbol next to the URL
• Verify where the company is registered and how recent the registration is
• Ensure that antivirus software and system updates are current
• Remember, “If an offer looks too good to be true, it probably is!”

Johnny Miliken, Senior Cyber Security Manager at EKCO, emphasised the importance of preparing for the worst. In the unfortunate event of falling victim to fraud, Johnny urged attendees to contact their bank, notify the Gardai, reach out to social media platforms and, importantly, share their experience with friends and family to help prevent others from being scammed.

“It’s crucial not to be embarrassed if you’re scammed,” Johnny added. “Sharing information helps reduce the effectiveness of these scams for criminals.”

Attendees left the event armed with knowledge and a heightened awareness of the risks posed by cybercrime, which has now become the third-largest global economy, behind the US and China.
