St Ita’s Ward, situated on the grounds of St Brigid’s Hospital in Ardee, achieved a compliance rate of 97% during its latest inspection by the Mental Health Commission. The inspection took place from May 28 to May 31, 2024.

The centre, registered for ten beds, provides care under the HSE’s governance. All residents are treated by a single multidisciplinary team (MDT) specializing in rehabilitation and recovery.

Overall, the centre was compliant in 38 of 39 inspection categories, earning commendations for areas such as the safety of residents, appropriate care and treatment, respect for residents’ privacy and dignity, responsiveness to residents’ needs, and robust governance.

The report particularly noted the refurbishment of the premises. New flooring had been installed, and the centre upgraded its clinical facilities and security systems since the last inspection.

However, the inspection revealed ongoing challenges in staffing. Regulation 26: Staffing, received a moderate-risk rating due to gaps in mandatory training. While most staff had completed required training in areas such as Basic Life Support and Children First, training in fire safety and the Mental Health Act 2001 remained incomplete for some healthcare staff.

Corrective actions are already in place, and the report noted that all mandatory training is expected to be completed by the end of 2024.

The ward comprises ten single bedrooms, two with en suite facilities. The report said residents have access to a dining room, communal lounge, activities room, occupational therapy kitchen, and a well-maintained garden area. The centre is decorated with resident artwork, and bedrooms are personalised to reflect individual preferences.

It was also noted that residents have benefited from a range of therapeutic services, including new initiatives such as a weekly snooker group facilitated by Snooker and Billiards Ireland and a Nature Group funded by the Nursing and Midwifery Planning and Development Unit (NMPDU).

Residents praised the centre’s efforts, particularly the variety of activities and the quality of meals. While some residents expressed a desire to see their doctor more frequently, the overall feedback was highly positive. Residents felt their privacy and dignity were respected and appreciated their involvement in care planning.
